SHOOT GOALS! SHOOT MOVIES! The League of Talents
The Artistic and Cultural Programme to the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM and the Berlinale Talent Campus present SHOOT GOALS! SHOOT MOVIES!, a compilation of 45 short films on the love and glory of football. Over 600 filmmakers applied to this competition. 45 films were selected by the Berlinale Talent Campus. They have been released on DVD, too.
Warm-up
Germany is the host of the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM, one of the most celebrated events worldwide for a sport that is understood globally, a sport that unites cultures. "And so does film", says Christine Dorn, Director of the Berlinale Talent Campus, host of 530 filmmakers from 90 countries. "The internationality of the Campus with participants and experts from five continents especially proves the universality of the film’s language." That’s why in January 2004 Christine Dorn and Dieter Kosslick met André Heller, the Curator of the Artistic and Cultural Programme to the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM, to organise a short film competition on football. In April 2004 the Nationale DFB Kulturstiftung WM 2006 and the Federal Foreign Office decided to fund this great idea.
Kick-Off
On October 15, the application deadline ended and 611 applications from 75 countries had been received. Instantly, the jury, headed by Thomas Struck and Alfred Holighaus (Director Perspektive Deutsches Kino / Berlinale) sifted through the overall outstanding submissions, including entries from countries with a rather young filmmaking infrastructure like Benin, Sri Lanka or Uganda. Finally they chose 45 short films from 29 countries. Right after this, Thomas Struck began compiling the contributions. Together with editor Dirk Grau (Rhythm Is It) he worked out the dramaturgy, while Jörn Hintzer and Jakob Hüfner (Datenstrudel) created the artwork, and Tom Third, winner of the Volkswagen Score Competition at the Berlinale Talent Campus 2004, composed the score. But: "All theory is grey", as a German striker once pointed out, "important is what happens on the greens". So it was time for kick-off: The compilation had its premiere on Tuesday 15, 2005, attended by guests like Franz Beckenbauer and André Heller.
The Final Score
45 goals: The final compilation offers a unique variation of in-depth looks of the overall connecting sport, leading us around to unofficial playgrounds across four continents, proving the filmmakers’ deep passion for football around the globe. With animations, documentaries, fiction and experimental films, this compilation represents the whole width of cinematic forms to illustrate the cultural wealth of a common passion.
The Season's Course
SHOOT GOALS! SHOOT MOVIES! is shown within the frame of the official Artistic and Cultural Programme to the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM, and in Goethe-Institutes across the world. Besides their invitation to the Berlinale Talent Campus in February 2005 the selected winners will be invited to the events of André Heller’s outstanding visionary football programme for one week.
The Berlinale Talent Campus
The Berlinale Talent Campus is part of the Berlin International Film Festival and a tutorial platform and forum for over 500 young film professionals. The filmmakers are selected on the basis of 1-minute work samples, and have the chance to meet and exchange ideas with experienced experts and colleagues from all over the world.
Artistic and Cultural Programme to the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM
Besides the sporting events, arts and culture are an integral part of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany TM. To this aim, the German government has inaugurated the Artistic and Cultural Programme to the 2006 FIFA World Cup TM, which is presented by the cultural foundation of the DFB (German Football Association), and headed by André Heller as curator. The 2006 FIFA World Cup TM offers the unique possibility to get the people of the host country and the general public all over the world in the mood for the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany TM.
